Apply matte medium to surface of banner and glue down decorative papers.
Open your kit and layout all of the supplies. You will be using the foam brush for several steps; you will need to wash out twice.
Kit includes collage materials: curated images from vintage books, tissue/handmade papers, 3-d elements; plus, stickers, glue-stick, matte medium and one 5-panel banner. There are enough collage images and tissue/handmade papers to complete one side of the banner. We encourage you to add a message on the reverse side or add your own images and left over collage materials.
You will need scissors, paper plate and markers. We recommend you cover your work surface with newspaper. Optional items: acrylic paint, markers, your own images and 3-d elements.
Step 1: the tissue/handmade paper will be the background for your design, layout the papers to find the composition you prefer.
Step 2: Pour a cookie size amount of matte medium onto your paper plate. Apply a thin coat of matte medium across your banner, going one at a time. Cut or tear the tissue/handmade papers to fit on the banner then lay on the matte medium. Use the foam brush to smooth out the papers. Layer the papers to create interesting visuals.
Step 3: The matte medium may cause the banner elements to ‘warp’ – don’t be concerned, once dry they will lay flat. Set the banner aside to dry (approx. 15 minutes) and wash out the foam brush, gently squeeze out excess water then lay it flat to dry.
Step 4: While the banner is drying look through the images – decide on a composition, consider the use of negative space. When the banner is dry use the glue stick (applying glue the back side of the image), then press in place with image side up. Do not use matte medium on papers with glossy surfaces.
Step 5: Look over your designs doe they need anything else? Add the stickers now, continue your collage until you are satisfied with the design.
Step 6: Use the foam brush to apply another coat of matte medium to seal your collage. Avoid painting over any glossy images you have added. Add 3-d elements last.
Step 7: You can use any remaining collage materials to create a collage on the reverse side of the banner. We encourage you to add a personal mantra, poem or message.
